new record?

it would appear that madison's snow record may be in jeopardy this weekend. this is the real deal, y'all. tonight's precursor to the main show has been beefed up enough by convection in iowa (could be some thundersnow tonight) to bring totals to 4-7" (locally 9) by saturday morning.

there will be a lull most of the day saturday, with perhaps flurries, drizzle or sleet off and on, followed by the main event saturday night and sunday morning. i expect thundersnow once again, and with winds of 25-40 with higher gusts, a blizzard is likely. that means zero visibility and all sorts of other cool things.

by monday morning, i'd expect widespread totals of 12-20" across southern wisconsin, with a few locales reaching 2 feet. this is almost unheard of up here outside of lake-effect. in fact, it's been since the early nineties that even a foot was recorded.

snow showers will continue much of sunday and even into monday. winds will be lighter then, but strong enough to keep the roads a mess once they are cleaned.
