quick update

comic
everything seems to be on track tonight. widespread thundersnow has been reported in northern illinois, both in/near chicago (thanks, kirsten) and around the quad cities. this entire area of precip is headed this way. assuming the thunderstorms hold together, they'd be here as soon as 9, and would then be possible off and on all night. even if this doesn't occur, these heavier bands will produce 2-4"/hr. snowfall rates!! flakes could be 1-2 inches wide during this as well.

winds have gusted as high as 40 so far, could see gusts to 50 overnight as thunderstorms/heavy precip bring down stronger winds from aloft (as high as 80 mph just above the surface). blizzard conditions have certainly verified even at this early hour.

8-12" looks good for tonight.

then the storm will stall to our south, producing several more rounds of snow sunday afternoon through monday. i'd expect another 3-6" during this period, bringing totals across all of southern wisconsin to 18-24".

i believe ~21" is the most madison has ever seen in a snowstorm (and like this one, it was spread over a few days). i'll check back on that, but obviously you'll be hearing about it if we break it.

good times.
